Drifters Newsletter May 2016

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Hola amigos y amigas –

But please, stay classy: remember that Puerto Rican’s and Filipino’s aren’t included in that May 05 thing. Just a bit of internet humor there. In other new – since I seemed to get ZERO, none, nada interest in the “Great Rocky Mountain Ride” in August, I cancelled my reservation on the 4-bedroom cabin in Twin Lakes. But I haven’t totally thrown in the towel. They had a two Mt. Elbert’s Lodge (http://www.mount-elbert.com/) had a two-bedroom cabin with kitchen for a few days beginning Monday, August 08. So I grabbed that, if perhaps for no one but my lonesome. The plan still is to travel across UT 12 to Torrey on Saturday or Sunday (August 06/07) arriving at the lodge on Monday. Then I have laid out three or four days of 250 mile day rides exploring the high country around Leadville, Climax, Kremmling, Steam Boat Springs, Frisco, Loveland Pass via Route 6 and the steam trains at Georgetown. Crossing the continental divide multiple t imes at Independence, Engineer Pass, Loveland. I bicycled this area many years and many pounds ago with 2000 other cyclists on a “De n v e r Po s t Ri d e t h e Rockies” and I want to revisit many of those roads I huffed and puffed my way up – or blasted down on a 1 inch 100 PSI bald tire! If I choose to extend my travels, I’ll head south towards Pagosa Springs. That would be all new territory to me. Returning through Monument Valley with an overnight in Bluff or Mexican Hat.

Monarch Pass Mountain Curves

And it looks like I’ll have the Indian back soon. Just heard from the dealer that they have put 44 miles back on the bike after installing a new electrical body harness and no error codes! So I will have a hand-assembled bike. What do you think the chances of that going well?

Secretary’s corner:

Hi Drifters,

Well, another month has sailed by. We had a wonderful Dinner last month at Rib & Chop House – with 21 Drifters showing up to partake of a fine meal and great company.

A few Drifters (10) made the annual trek to Laughlin, NV for the River Run Rally – Some of us ate at Bubba Gump’s Shrimp Co., and some went to the Bar in the Saltgrass Steakhouse. Even the waiters at Bubba’s were promoting happy hour at Saltgrass! (Looks like next time, that’s the ticket!) Of the 10 Drifters who joined the festivities, only 1 brave soul (you guessed it, John M) actually rode his steel horse. Turned out that the forecasted bad weather pretty much held off until the Drifters were back on their home turf.

Upcoming events:
This weekend the Beaver Dam Jam runs Friday through Sunday. (Anyone planning to go?)
Also, Mesquite Days (BBQ, Parade, etc…) is this weekend.
Saturday May 14th is the day ride to Caliente, NV.
Saturday May 21st, is our monthly Drifter Dinner at Capellettis.
Coming up on June 4th is a day ride to the North Rim.

Cancellation:
The Trip to Colorado schedule for August 13th through August 21st has been cancelled. Events calendar has been updated accordingly.  John T. is still planning on going, and as he stated above, he does have a two-bedroom cabin reserved, so if anyone wants to go along for the ride, let him know.

As of late, our Fearless Leader – John T has been bikeless. His ride has been in the Indian shop undergoing major renovations. I’m sure you will join me as I send up positive thoughts to the heavens, that his mount be restored to it’s original and intended running condition.   John hasn’t been able to join us for many rides lately, and I’m sure Greg is in the process of removing his passenger seat!

A new item for you to see:  Be sure to check out our new Official Drifters Merchandise page here on our website.  First item on display is our beautiful embroidered patches – we just got a fresh batch in and they are available in two sizes! Interested parties, contact John T, or let me know so I can get the word to him. Prices are shown on the page.

Happy Mother’s Day to all our Mothers!
