Drifters Newsletter December 2016

Message from the Prez:

Season’s greetings, fellow Drifters, this time from the Drizzle of So. Carolina. Hope everyone recovered well from their Thanksgiving feeding and had at least one or two more rides before winter arrived – or what passes for winter in Southern Utah.

I was smart enough for a change to actually schedule some time off from flying and joined Tom Fabio, Marty Smith, Don Garton, Greg Clark, and “Crazy Dan” on his BMW for a trip to Rocky Point MX for their annual rally. We cut the trip short this year, only partying a couple of nights. Included in the adventure was a short ride south (I guess) to the Mayan Palace. I thought we were a long way from the Mayan’s – turned out to be a big, all-inclusive resort. Really nice, if you want to be out in positively no where. All you real estate development types – Mexico definitely has a few locations ready to sink your money into. Plan on a return in a few millennium.

On the return, instead of crossing at the sleepy town of Sonoita, we decided to adventure north west from Rocky Point and try our luck sneaking under the fence at San Luis. Big, big mistake. If we had not be tipped off by some bikers in Rocky Point, we would have been waiting in a two mile, inescapable line of cars. Instead, with prior knowledge, we skirted the line to the left and cut in just before the portal. I thought this would be good cause for Tex/Mex road rage, but apparently, it is common practice. Unfortunately, Marty – in the lead – didn’t know about the cutting in part and proceeded through the Security Pass gate. The wrath of the Border Patrol defended up him, threatening $50,000 fines and confiscation of his ride. He was given “two or three more incidents” however before this action would be taken. I’d like to ride along.

Now, the real reason for my rambling: The ANNUAL DRIFTER CHRISTMAS PARTY! Coming up, you know. Ms. Dawn has again done all the heavy lifting and arranged for our sumptuous feasting at The Cliffside. Those that attended last year enjoyed it a lot, so don’t miss it again if you couldn’t / didn’t come last year. Be sure to RSVP with Lynne Piper and fork over your $37 per plate.

White Elephant Rules: (Don’t you just love rules). I think the only one is that if you’ve seen a gag gift before, we would prefer not seeing it again. Either get more creative, or dig something of some uselessness in the garage or back of the closet. I actually try to bring something useable – by anyone other than me. Given that I hardly used it, perhaps I should wrap up my Indian. Nah – that’s not going to happen. But be on the lookout for some “almost unused” HD nicknacks.

Hope to see you there. If not – Have a Very Merry Christmas!

Secretary’s Corner:

Well, the year is winding to an end…actually it’s moving warp speed (yes, I’m a Trekkie).  It’s been a great year spending time with my Drifter buddies!  I’m looking forward to the Drifter annual Christmas Party on the 10th, our New Year’s Day Ride to Mesquite, and finally our annual Membership meeting Saturday January 28th.  I hope I get to see all of your smiling faces in the coming days.. for those of you away for the holidays, I wish you Health, Peace, and Happiness (and maybe a sunny day to go for a ride)!

Keep the shiny side up!

Dawn
